Streaks Made Me Care More About the Number Than the Habit
Streak counters are supposed to keep you motivated, but when I tracked how I actually felt during a long streak, the number started working against the habit it was meant to support.
Read the logRecent weeks, plotted honestly, gaps included
All the logsn = 5 logs written by hand over 2 weeks. The wide marks are the weeks that produced nothing, and they are left in on purpose.
The claim, and then the log
Every myth I have testedThe idea is simple enough: a visible streak gives you something to protect, and protecting it keeps you consistent.
Taken apart in Streaks Made Me Care More About the Number Than the Habit, where the log is set against the claim line by line.
Where the claim usually turns up, rather than where it came from.
Days before the easiest habit on the list felt automatic. This one matched, which is presumably why the claim survives.
Days before the morning walk stopped requiring a decision. Nearly three times the promised figure.
Days on the evening shutdown routine, and I would still not call it automatic. Some habits never stop costing something.
Verdict: not wrong, just far too narrow. Three weeks is roughly the floor for the easiest possible habit. Quoting it as the ceiling is why people quit on day thirty and conclude something is wrong with them.
n = 209 days across three habits, one notebook, no app.

The weekly thread
Every Sunday I write down what held and what came apart. If a week produced nothing worth reporting, I say that instead of padding it.
